Beat the Heat: How to keep cool while looking the part

It's a hot and humid summer afternoon and you've been roped into attending the annual company bbq in the park. At this socially awkward, semi-mandatory celebration of "teamwork" you are forced to spend most of your Saturday sitting in between the CEO's wife, Lucille and Howard from accounting as they discuss their love for goldendoodles.  But you can at least LOOK like you're having a good time.
So what do you wear? It's casual enough to drop the suit and tie but still requires a dash of sophistication (especially if you hope to impress the boss who inexplicably calls you "Ron" although you've worked for him for three years). Unfortunately your wool blazers and double pleated dockers are creating a self contained sauna under your coat.
To prevent embarrassing sweat stains from consuming your entire wardrobe this summer try expanding your fabric palette beyond the wool sport coat you bought during college.

1) Cotton is a classic-
It's light enough for even the hottest day and breaths better than its wool counterparts. Just beware of creases, cotton has a tendency to wrinkle in very unflattering places.

2) Remember Linen?
To avoid worrying that you look like you slept in your suit the night before, think linen. Although it's become increasingly rare as a fabric used in modern suits, a vintage linen blazer can really set the bar. Like cotton it has a tendency to wrinkle but with linen that's part of the charm. Subtle imperfections will give you the laid-back look that fits the summer tone.

3) Make sure you match!
Pair a light-colored cream or beige jacket with a pastel dress shirt, jeans or slacks, and a pair of brown leather wingtips with low-cut socks that don't show above your shoe. It doesn't matter what you wear if it doesn't match! Piece together complimenting tones and you'll not only look like a man in the know, you may actually enjoy your outdoor obligations this summer.

4) If the shirt fits...
During these hot summer months to come remember that it's ok to remove your jacket during a party. Just ensure that you get your shirt as meticulously tailored as your suit. A well-fitting shirt can be just as flattering as an expensive jacket while still allowing you to move freely.

Welcome to BoxCar Clothing, A Blog for the Well-Dressed Man

Your source for our latest inventory, hot deals, updates, fashion tips and more!
BoxCar Clothing was founded in 2009 to fill a void in the vintage clothing community. While searching for vintage men's suits I found a shortage of high-end men's clothing boutiques that carried the kind of inventory now available on our site. We worked to change that. Finally men have an online source of designer & vintage men's fashion for every occasion.
